Mini-Review by Harriet Yoder

I am impressed with the ease of use for the teacher–if you ever wanted to use the principle approach but needed some guidance, the Mighty Works of God Teacher’s book is very helpful. As a late bloomer to Christianity, I was in the midst of having babies and homeschooling when I learned about the Principle Approach, nearly twenty years ago. It was overwhelming for me to try to learn and teach it to the children at the same time, and I gave up after gleaning what I could. I am glad to see this set. I am using it with the boys, and we are seeing God’s mighty hand in our history.

The artwork in the student book is wonderful. Don’t you love a well-designed book?

There’s a CD-Rom that’s included in the Teacher’s Guide for printing student work pages from your computer. As someone who dislikes holding a baby on my hip and amusing a toddler while making copies at the local copier store, this is a blessing! Well, can you tell I started homeschooling back in the ’80s!

There are three levels in the Mighty Works of God series: Self Government, Liberty and Justice for All, Divine Providence.

Also, from the folks at Bradford Press is the fabulous reprint of Benjamin West and His Cat Grimalkin by Marguerite Henry. Noah Webster Father of the Dictionary is also newly republished.

Why Use the Mighty Works of God Series?

The main reason to use this series to teach history is that it is based on the Principle Approach. I admit that I am not an expert, but what I did learn from it was that our nation has a Christian heritage, God was, is, and still has His hand in the workings of our nation, and how to “read, research, and reason.”

That’s why when people ask me for what grades can you use the Mighty Works series, I tell them it’s up to them. Though intended for primary grades, if your upper elementary children don’t know these basics, then do all three, but do them faster. If they have excellent reading skills, let them read sections in the Teacher’s Guide that you would be reading aloud to a primary student. You can adjust the assignments that seem too easy for the older student.
